Meet the Brookland Middle School Cubs: A Community Where Every Student Belongs

At Brookland Middle School, no single culture, background, or story defines the community — and that’s exactly what makes it extraordinary. Nestled in a vibrant corner of our city, Brookland is home to students from 27 different nationalities who speak 12 languages. In the hallways, you’ll hear a blend of accents, see a rainbow of traditions, and witness friendships that cross every imaginable line.

“There’s no majority ethnic group here,” says Principal Barlett. “No matter who you are or where you come from, there’s someone you can relate to.”

The Cubs, as they’re proudly known, are united by a deep craving for connection — and extracurricular activities are at the heart of that. Sports teams, music ensembles, theater productions, and clubs give students the space to discover themselves, make friends, and dream bigger than they thought possible.

Principal Barlett describes the school’s spirit in three words: Diverse. Growth-focused. Perseverant. These aren’t just labels; they’re a way of life. Every student is encouraged to reach their own highest potential, no matter where they start. Challenges are met with grit and teamwork, and the community rallies to ensure no one is left behind.

Many Brookland families have journeyed far — across states, even across oceans — seeking a better life for their children. They arrive with hopes for brighter futures: college degrees, fulfilling careers, and lives full of opportunity. And at Brookland, those dreams are nurtured from the very first day.

This year, Brookland is working to grow its performing arts program, particularly drama, while also striving for full equity between boys’ and girls’ athletics. For some students, these programs are not just hobbies — they’re gateways to confidence, leadership, and lifelong passions.

That’s where you come in. With the support of Start 1 Spark and donors like you, Brookland is setting out to eliminate the barriers — financial, logistical, or otherwise — that might keep a student from joining a team, auditioning for a role, or signing up for a club.

“My sincere goal,” says Principal Barlett, “is that no student shies away from the amazing experiences available to them just because of finances or accessibility.”

This school year, the Cubs have big dreams. And together, we can make sure every single one of them has the chance to chase them.
