Volunteer Spotlight

“If you’re thinking about getting involved, just go for it. You might discover something you never expected.”
That advice sums up how Elle Cota approaches life—and volunteering. Whether she’s exploring a new place or diving into a creative project, Elle loves discovering something new along the way.
As a student, Elle was on the shy side. The arts gave her a voice and a way to express herself. Writing became her passion, which led her to the Robertson School of Communication at VCU. So when she heard about an opportunity to write Start 1 Spark’s monthly newsletter last spring, she jumped at the chance to combine creativity with purpose.
“Being able to inspire youth and help them see what’s possible means so much to me,” Elle says. “I was a kid once too, and I know how much a little encouragement can mean. Even if it’s just adults reading what I write, I hope they take something from it as well—because I want everyone to find the spark within themselves.”
Through her writing, Elle has learned how powerful stories can be. She loves knowing that her words might encourage someone to take that first step toward something new. A nature lover at heart, Elle believes even small actions—like writing a story or lending a hand—can make a big difference.
We’re so grateful to Elle for sharing her creativity, her perspective, and her spark with our community.
