Volunteer  Spotlight

There was no drama to be found when volunteers played a key role in helping two drama performance events run smoothly while creating a welcoming environment for students and families. Among those noble volunteers was Lisa Rodriguez, a dedicated community member who has recently spent her time assisting behind the scenes and supporting Start 1 Spark’s mission.

Rodriguez's passion for giving back to the community and supporting programs that help young people build confidence first convinced her to volunteer. What also convinced her was her personal connection to the school, “It was especially meaningful because my son attended John Rolfe Middle School.”

For Rodriguez, one of the most rewarding parts of the experience was watching students take center stage and seeing families come together to celebrate their achievements.

Throughout the performances, Rodriguez took on a multitude of responsibilities, including registering families at the front, serving the pre-show meal to hungry performers, and working concessions during intermission. Her willingness to step in when needed helped create a positive experience for both performers and attendees. One of her most meaningful experiences was seeing the overwhelming support families showed for their children during the performances.

“I simply tried to be helpful, welcoming, and do whatever was needed to support the event,” said Rodriguez. “The pride and encouragement in the room showed how important it is for young people to know they have a strong support system behind them.”

Beyond volunteering at events, Rodriguez has also helped promote Start 1 Spark throughout the community. Inspired by the organization’s impact, she wants more local businesses and community members to learn about the opportunities available to students. An introduction to Cici’s Pizza owner, Eric Jackson, launched Start 1 Spark’s campaign to collect gently used sports gear during the winter Olympics.

As Start 1 Spark continues to connect students with opportunities in the arts, volunteers like Rodriguez demonstrate the power of community involvement. Her efforts reflect how schools, families, volunteers, and local businesses can work together to create meaningful experiences for young people. Through volunteer support, students gain not only opportunities to perform and grow but also the confidence that comes from knowing their community is cheering them on every step of the way.
