Batter Up! Brookland Softball Team’s New Uniforms Make an Impact

Brookland Middle School’s softball team started their spring season with a homerun - new uniforms!

Athletics Director Tyree Walker stated the team was excited to receive support from Start 1 Spark who was the driving force behind outfitting the softball team.

Receiving these uniforms was really important to the team. In a fresh, new look it showed how dedicated and serious they were about their team.

“In previous years, we have struggled to field a complete team. It was important for us to show our athletes that we have their back and want them to work towards team goals and give their best all while looking good,” said Walker. 

Walker further explains about the softball program and what it means to the school and players.

“This year our school softball program at Brookland was smaller in roster size but mighty in CUB pride, commitment to improve and dedicated to the team goals,” said Walker.

The uniforms had a huge impact on the player’s confidence, pride, and overall team spirit.

“The team morale and energy was definitely impacted including seeing the smiles and celebrating their success on the field,” said Walker.

Brookland’s athletic department works hard to make sure student-athletes have the resources and support they need to be successful.

“We are fortunate to have budgeted an allotment from the county to take care of many expenses. Various fundraisers are also organized as needed to fill in gaps. We keep inventories and emphasize taking care of our equipment, uniforms, and facilities,” said Walker.

It is a known fact that many athletes, no matter the sport, learn many valuable life lessons and skills. These lessons and skills could help improve a student athlete’s life and could let them reach high levels of success. 

“I like to emphasize that many life lessons learned through sports translate to the workforce and beyond. The importance of being student-athletes and focusing on character development include sportsmanship, goal setting, being punctual, and teamwork,” said Walker.

Students like Vayah and Hailey expressed their enthusiasm about being on the team and what they have discovered about themselves while playing this type of sport.

“My favorite thing about being in a sport is getting to know people,” said Vayah.

She also states how it feels good being a part of the team and being able to show off her school’s jersey. In her second year as team catcher, Vayah remarked how you can’t be lazy as a catcher!

Hailey started playing softball because her mother and grandmother played. Just like Vayah, being a part of a team is her favorite aspect of softball.

“I have discovered that practice makes perfect while playing this sport,” said Hailey.

The coaches, players, and Athletic Director all have aim to improve the future of the Brookland softball program.

“Our overall goal is to field a team of dedicated students who have a passion to compete in a nurturing, healthy, and fun environment," said Walker.

The softball team wants to continue preparing student athletes to be successful while working towards their goals in future whether it be high school sports, attending college, or entering the workforce. And, of course, doing it all in style!
